This is especially for my uncle Greg - who reminded me during our family Thanksgiving lunch that I haven't posted anything new on this blog for quite a while. SO...
I'm going to try a few catch up pics until I download the new ones from Thanksgiving :-)

This first one is of Phoebe, taken last month. Isn't she a cutie?!?

And here's the entire crew - Ben (11), Aaron (9), Lydia (7), Samuel (4), and Phoebe (just turned 3). We hiked up at Roan Mountain, which usually boasts a lovely view when the fog isn't as thick as cream-of-mushroom soup And the last one is of the youngest scientist in our family - Phoebe. I'm not sure who she's trying to be.

Rocks and Mountains

Grandfather Mountain in near Boone, NC has some spectacular views, but it also has some great hiking trails that the whole family can enjoy. We started out this hike with a bunch of whining kids who thought..."Great, a leisurely walk through the woods, that's exciting!"(sarcasm intended). We ended it with the kids wanting to stay longer because of the great climbing and 'hiding' opportunities. It was a lot of fun and brought us out underneath the Lynn Cove Viaduct, a bridge on the side of Grandfather Mountain.

Last week we had Vacation Bible School at our church and each class took pictures. They really turned out well. Ben despises the fact that his picture was taken by the 'girls' sign, since he loathes all things girly :-) This is the last picture we have of Lydia with her long hair, so...sigh, now she looks all grown up.

To get from the lake to the lake house we had to climb up the massive staircase of...83, 97, 103 steps? No one really knew for sure, but by the end of the week, my mom was certain the steps had gone up to about 386 as long as it took us to get from the bottom to the top.

Dad has a small speed boat, so we all enjoyed some fun rides down the lake. Of course, anytime you go at high speeds on a boat, your hair is sure to suffer. A Visit to the Lake

This past week we spent at Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke, Va with my folks. The kids had a great time learning things from their Papa like...how to drive a boat, how long one can hold ones' breath while Papa holds him under water ;-), how to skin a catfish...you know, the basics. We had such a great time.

Here's another camping pic from this week. Our tent site was beside a lovely little brook, so the kids enjoyed climbing on the rocks, making a dam, and pulling themselves up on the bank by holding to poison oak. We're hoping that the dirt Phoebe ate counteracted the possible allergic reaction to poison oak...so far so good.

As you can probably tell, Aaron has no trouble posing for the camera. He and Lydia are gifted in that way. So here the thesbian is creating a dam in the stream. He looks pretty proud, doesn't he?

Lydia has a particular fondness for umbrellas. I'm not sure why, but usually when she's outside (rain or shine) she totes an umbrella around with her. On this particular day, she, Samuel, and Phoebe had found their way on top of a box in the playground and where enjoying a bit of shade from the sun - via lydia's umbrella...It doesn't look like Samuel's getting much shade though.

We have a new member of the Basham family. Lily is a 3 month old lab - something mix and is incredibly sweet. We just got her on Saturday and the kids love her. Her favorite pasttime (so far) is playing with the kids and chewing on one of Aaron's old shoes :-)

We haven't received very much snow down here in the valley, so Dwight took the oldest three Basham kids up to Roan Mountain to sleigh ride. Besides a few war wounds here and there, they had a blast.

Lydia's Birthday

Here are the faces of the 'party girls' who attended Lydia's 7th birthday party. The girls had a fashion show. It was definitely....interesting and full of various attempts at personality and preference juggling. They all seemed to have fun. Lydia wanted a chocolatel chip cookie cake + we had Chic-fil-A chicken nuggets - which even pleased the big brothers.

The party also included paper dolls, necklace making, and decorating little carry bags. Praise God for the Dollar Tree.

For her birthday, Lydia received a new dress for her American girl doll, below. Lydia enjoyed 'dressing' up too.

Well, here's the latest pic of the Basham kids. Oldest to youngest - Ben (10), Aaron (8), Lydia (6), Samuel (3), and Phoebe (2). Here's one of those rare moments where everyone is clean, dressed, and relatively...happy :-) Of course, the Christmas tree was pretty jam-packed with presents, so those smiles might have a synthetically-induced glow :-)

We've been very blessed this Christmas, as we are every Christmas, because the reason for our joy is the same as it has been for years: Jesus.

We left the Air & Space Museum and headed toward the White House. But first, where else would we stop for lunch than the 'All-American' McDonalds :-) Wow, D.C. is EXPENSIVE!! Especially when one has to buy for seven people!

Obviously, from the icon in the backdrop here, we are in Washington D.C. Our next stop on our summer vacation was the Smithsonian, but we stopped for this quick picture on our way. It was neat to think about having been in two nations capitals within one summer. Before May of this year, I had never been on a subway, plane, or train and now I'd done them all - and ridden the subway in two different countries. Wow, what a summer!!

Here is a picture of Ben, Aaron, and Phoebe checking out the elephants. This particular elephant gave us a little show, led by his trainer. He opened his mouth and smiled, lifted his truck, and pranced. He seemed to enjoy the attention and the peanuts.

Ben was looking for a Cheetah at the National Zoo, but the animals seemed to be shy. The only interesting wildlife we saw around the Cheetahs, was Samuel dancing around like a monkey.

Now with the Panda exhibit, Ben was not disappointed. Since the National Zoo is known for it's Giant Pandas, we got a few shots up close and personal. :-)

In the Shenandoah Discovery Museum, the kids had a chance to practice working together by using 'simulation' of produce production. The main goal of the simulation was to introduce kids to pulleys and levers and how all those nice gadgets work. I was so tickled to see the four oldest get involved in packing the apples, pulling them up to the 'store', placing them on a conveyer, and then lowering them into the 'truck'. Aaron stayed at this part of the museum for the entire time we were there.

In Winchester, the children enjoyed 2-3 fun hours of 'discovery' at the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum. Here is a picture of Ben and Phoebe experimenting with various ramp & motion designs to see how balls follow the track of the design. Although Ben got the cool science ideas behind these various 'experiments', Phoebe just enjoyed getting the little balls and throwing them around the room. Hmmm, good thing there weren't a lot of other kids around, eh?

In August we took our family vacation in the northern part of Virginia, renting a house just north of Harrisonburg. The small farmhouse was three bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths with lots of outside space + cats. Here's a picture of Dwight and Phoebe enjoying the great outdoors.

In the heat of the first week of August, we set out on an adventure to northern Virginia. Our first stop was to visit Dwight's family in the college town of Christiansburg, VA which neighbors Blacksburg, home of the Virginia Tech Hokies. While in Christiansburg, we had a chance to catch up with Dwight's brother and oldest daughter, as well as provide a leg-stretcher for five very energetic kids.

Obviously not an elevator, as they'd say in England. This 'lift' is a small ride at Tweetsie to take you to the top of the hill to more rides...and a nice view of the mountains. Dwight and Samuel rode together....me and the girls rode together, and Ben & Aaron where thrilled to get to ride by themselves (without parents)

The Vomiter

Ben and Aaron called this spinning ride "The Vomiter", but I'm not sure why. No one had to be an example of the ride's ability to spin one in nausea ;-) I think they rode it about six times....and if they didn't vomit by then, they probably weren't going to. I made it through three rides before I decided it was time to stop, or the ride was going to live up to its name.

Dwight, Aaron, and Samuel get ready for a ride on Thomas the Tank Engine. It did get a bit hot this day, but we had a good time anyway. The best part was watching Samuel's delight as we chugged along the track on his favorite engine.

In June, Thomas the Tank Engine came to Blowing Rock N.C.'s Tweetsie Railroad....and we were there. Samuel, our current biggest train fan, was so excited to see the real Thomas engine and have an opportunity to ride on it.

Birthday boy

I know, I know....I'm way behind. Here is a picture of Samuel on his 3rd birthday. We have a tradition in our family of birthday pancakes, so you see Samuel with his special pancake. He's a hilarious kid, has the truck-airplane-train loving boy streak, and doesn't like dirt on his feet. We also celebrated the fact that he's a 90% potty trained 3 year old. Nighttimes are still a bit tricky, but were' pretty sure his bladder is the size of a sweet pea, because he wakes up about three times a night to go to the potty. So....we're saving on money but not on sleep :-)

Can you tell that Ben's excited about his Card Games and Tricks stocking stuffer? He's always trying to figure out a way to trick us, so here's a safe way to do that :-) Next is Aaron with his Webkinz, the cute, cuddly little critters that are all the latest craze. Aaron's has two puppy Webkinz, Lydia has two horses, Ben has a husky and panda, and Samuel (who doesn't play on the computer) has a cat. I don't have to get online to enter the Webkinz World, my kids are usually talking about it all the time.

The Delights of Christmas

By the title I'm referring to my children and not their presents, though they'd disagree with me most ardently.
